If you slip up on your nutritional plan, all is not lost. Let's talk through some strategies you can apply to help...

Adhering to your nutrition plan can feel like a consistent battle, I totally get it! It can feel even more challenging when you are face-to-face with tempting treats or you've gotten yourself into a stressful situation and are longing for some comfort food.
Slipping up on your diet can happen from time to time, but what matters the most is how you bounce back from those slip-ups. You have the power to take control of your nutritional habits and even if something doesn't go to plan, you can still course correct.
Below are some effective strategies that you can incorporate into your life to help you overcome those pesky slips ups on your nutrition plan and stay committed to your health goals:
Understand What Your Triggers Are:
Identifying what triggers you to slip up on your nutrition plan is important. Potential triggers could be stress, boredom, social situations, or simply being unprepared with your current nutrition plan. Once you know what your triggers are, you can proactively plan strategies to help manage them.
Plan Ahead:
One of the most effective ways to prevent going off track with your nutrition is to plan your meals and snacks. One of my all-time favourite quotes of all time is "If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail." When you are prepared and have healthy options readily available, you are less likely to reach for unhealthy foods out of convenience. A great idea is to meal prep at the beginning of the week, this will ultimately save you time and ensure you have nutritious meals right at your fingertips.
Practice Mindful Eating:
Mindful eating is the practice of bringing more awareness to what you are eating. This can include engaging your senses, being aware of your body's hunger and fullness cues, only eating until full, eating slowly and without distractions, and appreciating the food you are consuming. By actually eating slowly and being aware of each bite you take, you give your brain the time it needs to register when you're full, which can help prevent overeating.
Keep Tempting Food Out of Sight:
If you know what foods tend to tempt you to go off plan, don't keep them in an easily accessible place. Like they say "Out of sight, out of mind". Try to keep your environment free of unhealthy snacks, it helps if they are not in the house to tempt you. Instead, s
tock up on nutritious alternatives.
Don't Deprive Yourself, Practice Moderation:
Allowing yourself to enjoy your favourite treats in moderation is part of a balanced diet and fosters a healthy relationship with food. Completely depriving yourself of the foods you love is likely to lead to cravings and eventual overindulgence. Try focusing on balance rather than restrictions, you can do this by incorporating small portions of the treats you enjoy into your nutrition plan in moderation.
Be Accountable:
Sharing your nutritional and health goals with your family, friends, or a support group can help increase accountability and motivation. A support system or accountability partner can greatly increase your chances of sticking to your nutritional plan. Encouragement and feedback can keep motivation high and help you stay on track.
Allow Yourself Some Grace:
It's important to remember that everyone makes mistakes and slips up occasionally. If you go off track with your nutrition, don't dwell on it or let it derail your progress. Instead, acknowledge what has happened, ensure you learn from it, and then use it as motivation to make better choices moving forward. Feelings of guilt and shame can lead to a cycle of emotional eating, so try not to beat yourself up about slip-ups. Embrace the practice of self-compassion and focus on taking positive steps towards the future.
By applying the above strategies, you give yourself the ability to navigate challenges more effectively, enabling you to stay on track with your health goals. Focus on creating a sustainable lifestyle filled with positive habits that support your long-term goals and health.
